    Dear Amanda and family,

Like other VUW Botany cohorts at VUW in the 1960s ours was a friendly bunch and Leon was a much appreciated member. Bonding of botany students in those days took place in the lab sessions, on “Biol Soc” trips, and especially during the traditional multi-day field trip to Tongariro National Park where the accommodation was at Taurewa field station. The Taurewa experience was made even more memorable by a painting of the site by Leon, which graced a wall of the biology tearoom for over three decades. My memories of Leon give me an appreciation of the quality of the man you have lost, and on behalf of Leon’s botany class I send you all my heartfelt sympathy,
    Margaret Gordon

    Dear Amanda and family
We were shocked and saddened to hear of Leon’s death. Having been Leon’s next door neighbours for over 20 years we had many chats and got to know him well. In our last conversation before he left he was very much looking forward to his new home and we wish he had more time to enjoy it.
Our sympathies are with you all.

    Hi Leon,
I well remember your Matakakite team meeting to ceIebrate the opening of your “man cave” in Karori. We didn’t know we were there to help put up the gib lining till we arrived! It was an astute team bonding session. We had fun and a welcome morning tea afterwards. You also over ordered the strawberries for our Christmas celebration in the
botanical gardens that same year. No one complained as we all left clutching paper bags! A life well lived and a legend. “Upon the upland road. Ride easy stranger” J K Baxter)

Remembering Leon and his many roles at Te Kura, The Correspondence School. So many interesting tales and a very supportive colleague. He always did his best for his students and encouraged them towards their goals.
    Rest now.
